Three Reasons to Choose a CEREC Same-Day Crown

Three Reasons to Choose a CEREC Same-Day Crown

A dental crown is typically the best solution for a tooth that is badly decayed or damaged. While traditional lab-created crowns are certainly an option, many dentists and patients are now turning to CEREC same-day crowns instead. Depending on who you ask, CEREC either stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or CERamic REConstruction. Either way, here are three reasons to choose a CEREC same-day crown.

1. Convenience

CEREC crowns are extremely convenient for patients and dentists alike. A traditional lab-created crown requires two appointments. At the first, your dentist will carefully clean out all the damage and decay and prepare the tooth to receive a crown. He or she will then take traditional impressions to send to the dental lab, and then place a temporary crown. Sometimes these impressions can be messy or make a patient gag. You will return in a few days or weeks for placement of the final crown.

Wtih the CEREC process, we repair your tooth for the necessary restoration and then make a digital impression scan of the tooth. This scan is then imported into specialized 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) software that creates an image of the new crown. This image is then sent to our in-office milling machine, where a block of color-matched restoration material is used to craft your final crown. We will place the crown before you leave, making it unnecessary to return for another appointment.

2. Aesthetics

Dental porcelain over a metal frame does not precisely resemble dental enamel, and the metal frame may show as a dark, thin line along the gums.

CEREC crowns are made solely of high-quality dental material that is most like your own teeth. This provides for a more natural, aesthetic appearance with less wear on opposing natural teeth.

3. Strength and Durability

Using CAD technology, we are able to craft a more precise and secure fit than that of a lab-created crown. The biocompatible material used in CEREC crowns is strong, durable, and stain resistant. It closely mirrors natural tooth enamel. In fact, a CEREC crown is approximately 18 percent stronger than the average lab-created crown. In addition, there is no need to put up with an ill-fitting, uncomfortable temporary crown while waiting up to two weeks for the final crown to arrive.

Of course, no single dental procedure makes sense for everyone. We will discuss your treatment options with you and help you select the one that best fits your personal needs and goals. For many patients though, a CEREC same-day crown is the best choice to enhance functionality and aesthetics while minimizing the amount of time spent sitting in the dentist’s chair.
